Faith, Family, and Pharmacy: The Story of The Prescription Shoppe
When Henry and Jade Ranger opened The Prescription Shoppe in Williamsburg, Virginia in March 2019, they were driven by something bigger than business. They were building a space where every patient would feel known, valued, and loved.
At the time, Henry was thriving in a corporate role with a national retailer. He was managing twenty pharmacies, traveling often, and advancing quickly. But the higher he climbed, the more he missed the part of pharmacy that mattered most to him.
“I really missed the patient interaction,” Henry said. “I loved knowing people by name, hearing their stories, being part of their care. In the corporate world, that part gets lost.”
Jade was more hesitant. With two young boys at home, the idea of walking away from stability was scary. “I was not initially someone who wanted to take the leap of faith,” she admitted. “You see so many independent pharmacies closing their doors, and I wasn’t sure we would make it. But after a lot of prayer and conversation, we realized we were young enough to recover if it didn’t work out. And if it did, we could create something special for our community.”

That leap of faith has since blossomed into a thriving, award-winning pharmacy that is redefining what patient care looks like in Williamsburg.
More Than Medicine

From the beginning, Jade and Henry set out to build a pharmacy that felt personal. Their mission statement says it best: At The Prescription Shoppe, you’re more than a customer. You’re family.
Jade’s warmth and creativity shine through every interaction. “We’re not just dispensing medication,” she said. “We’re showing up for people.”
When a patient celebrates a birth, they receive a handwritten card and a gift bag with diapers and wipes. When a family experiences loss, a floral arrangement and sympathy note arrive from the pharmacy. Jade and Henry have even attended patient funerals. “When you make genuine connections with people, they know it’s not performative,” Jade said. “It’s about being there, not just for their prescriptions but for their lives.”
That sense of presence extends into the community. The Prescription Shoppe partners with local schools, senior living communities, and William & Mary to host vaccine clinics each fall. They also participate in career days, health fairs, and mentorship events for students interested in pharmacy.
“One of the hashtags we use is ‘making a difference beyond the counter,’” Jade said. “Because that’s exactly what we try to do.”
A Partnership Built on Faith

Henry and Jade are partners in every sense. Their strengths complement each other perfectly.
“I’ve always been a numbers guy,” Henry said with a laugh. “Math was my favorite subject. Even in corporate pharmacy, I paid close attention to profit and loss reports and how to save money on medications.”
Jade’s talents are on the creative side. “I’m all about the details, the organization, the look and feel of the store,” she said. “Patients comment all the time about how nice it smells and how beautiful the space is. That’s intentional.”
Together, they’ve created a space that feels like home. As the first Black-owned pharmacy in Williamsburg, they also take pride in what their success represents. “We know how important visibility is,” Jade said. “We want to show that representation and excellence belong in every community.”
Advocacy and Innovation
For Henry and Jade, pharmacy ownership is about more than filling prescriptions. It is about pushing the profession forward.
They advocate for independent pharmacy at both the state and national level, meeting with legislators, joining advocacy days, and writing letters to raise awareness about the challenges pharmacy owners face. “We cannot wait for change to happen,” Jade said. “We have to be part of it.”
They also innovate constantly within their business. From point-of-care testing to compounding and long-term care services, The Prescription Shoppe continues to expand its reach. “You have to be willing to think outside the box,” Jade said. “Dispensing alone won’t sustain you. We’ve had to learn, adapt, and reinvent ourselves many times along the way.”

Powered by Partnership
In their early years, IPC played an important role in helping The Prescription Shoppe succeed.
“When we first opened, IPC was a lifeline,” Henry said. “Their pricing helped us keep costs low, and the payment terms gave us room to breathe while waiting for reimbursements. Our rep made sure we knew about every deal and discount available.”
That personalized support helped The Prescription Shoppe stay financially stable while growing its patient base. “It made a big difference,” Henry added. “IPC understands what independents are up against, and they really care about helping us stay competitive.”
A Culture of Care

Inside The Prescription Shoppe, leadership looks like service. Jade and Henry lead by example, whether that means sweeping floors, cleaning windows, or running the register alongside their team.
“We have a servant leadership style,” Jade said. “No one is above or beneath anyone else here. We celebrate birthdays, host quarterly meetings and outings, and invest in our staff’s growth. If someone wants to take a course or earn a certification, we’ll pay for it because we believe in them.”
That belief has created a strong, loyal team that reflects the same care patients feel every day.
The Mustard Seed Mentality

Outside of the pharmacy, Jade is also an author. Her book The Mustard Seed Mentality is a reflection of her faith and passion for inspiring others.
“I’ve always loved reading and writing,” she said. “The book came from a place of wanting to encourage people to keep going even when things feel small. Everything great starts with a seed.”
Her monthly column in the Virginia Gazette has become another way to reach and educate the community, and it continues to draw patients into the pharmacy
Looking Ahead
The Rangers are continuing to grow. Their long-term care pharmacy and compounding lab have outgrown their current space, and they plan to move into a larger location by early 2026.
“We started that pharmacy in 2023, and it took off faster than we expected,” Jade said. “We’re excited to expand, take on new communities, and keep building something that lasts.”
Even with all their success, their mission remains simple. “Every time someone new walks in and says they just discovered us. It reminds us why we started,” Jade said. “We want people to experience what true patient care feels like.”
