Can you tell us about the history of your pharmacy?

Waylon:

“Back in high school I worked for an independent pharmacy and I was a delivery driver, so that’s how I initially got started. When I graduated high school I was going to go to pharmacy school but it was a long process. After graduating from pharmacy school I was not ready to open up my own pharmacy so I started working for a chain. I ended up staying there for 13 years. I wanted to be able to provide customer service that you can’t always provide in chains so when an opportunity came up to invest in my own business I went for it. It was a long road but we (my wife and I) opened up our own store with all the features we had wished for. I spent a lot of time planning and designing because I knew what kind of a place I wanted.

The store was a brand new build; we have an old fashioned soda fountain, a coffee shop, and we make healthy smoothies. We have a good size OTC section with giftables, a private consultation room and a nice size pharmacy with room for growth which is what we’re hoping for. We also compound so I have two compounding rooms that we designed.

I wanted to bring some ‘old-school’ feel to the place, with the soda fountain and the giftables. The coffee part came later; when I had worked in a chain people would often drop off their prescriptions and go to Starbucks while they waited so I thought it would be great if they could just have a coffee or a smoothie right in our store while waiting for their prescription.”

IPC:

What is the area like, is it a big community?

Waylon:

“We are a suburb of Houston, it’s relatively large but we’re in front of a master planned community – there are over 8,000 homes directly behind us that are hidden from the interstate and the traffic. There are a lot of families, especially a lot of younger families.”

IPC:

Is there a lot of competition in the area?

Waylon:

“There are quite a few of the bigger chains in the area. There is one other independent within about a half a mile, and one compounding-only pharmacy close by. There is a little bit of a competition with independents but they are a pretty small footprint compared to our size.”

IPC:

What is the most rewarding aspect of being an independent pharmacist?

Waylon:

“Building the relationships with the customers is a huge rewarding aspect. Customers are so happy to have us as an option compared to the chains. We can get them in and out quickly and we also follow-up with them. It’s more like how pharmacies used to be, we create long-term relationships and we care about the customers. For kids we provide a free scoop of ice cream when they complete a full anti-biotics prescription so we are encouraging them and rewarding them for being adherent. We don’t just provide them the medication and send them on their way without following up and making sure everything is going ok. We want to get to know the kids and be their pharmacist for as long as they’re in the area. The customers aren’t just a number, we want to help them and understand what’s going on with their health.

People don’t always understand that their copays are the same no matter where they go, but now they are starting to understand that. They transfer over their prescriptions because they want to support small businesses and keep us up and running.”

IPC:

You seem very advanced for a small business; we see that you have a mobile app option for customers.

Waylon:

“Our technology is very advanced. We can run circles around the chains with our software system. The refill notifications and alerts through the app really help us stay competitive with the bigger places.”

IPC:

What are some of the biggest challenges?

Waylon:

“For any business, finding ways to get people to walk in the door is always a challenge. Being the sole pharmacist on staff, I can’t just shut the doors and go try to market the business like I would like to. It’s also difficult to find the right media or advertising; I think we’ve exhausted all different areas. Instagram and Facebook are great because they don’t cost us anything. Getting people through the door is the hard part but once they come in they stay. They are always impressed with our offerings and they come back.”

IPC:

It looks like you had a great open house event when you first opened?

Waylon:

“IPC was wonderful helping us out with the grand opening event. Unfortunately our grand opening fell right at the same time as Hurricane Harvey hit. We had to reschedule which I was very concerned about. IPC was very helpful with sending out new mailers and new flyers to let people know about the change. If it wasn’t for that I don’t know how many people would have showed up. The event ended up being well-received and we were very thankful for IPC’s help.”

IPC:

Overall how has your relationship with IPC been?

Waylon:

“I’ve absolutely been satisfied with the relationship with IPC; I appreciate my rep very much. He’s been very supportive since day one. You can tell he wants us to succeed and he’s always reaching out to help. Any time I call I get a response right away and I have nothing but positive things to say about the relationship.”

IPC:

Any other special services you’d like us to highlight?

Waylon:

“We are a hybrid store, we don’t just compound but we fill any prescription. We take pride in the uniqueness of our store. We not only offer outstanding pharmacy services but customers also love our soda fountain, healthy smoothies and giftables. We continue to stay fresh and relevant.”
