IPC Texas Members: Stop Physician Dispensing Before HB 1483 Reaches House Floor

Apr 17, 2015

Contact Your State Representative TODAY and tell them to Oppose HB 1483!

House Bill 1483 was approved by the House Public Health Committee on Tuesday and now must pass through the Calendars Committee in order to reach the House for a vote.

The IPC Government Relations Team (and Community Pharmacies Should) Strongly Oppose HB 1483. Take action now to stop HB 1483 immediately as HB 1483 would allow physicians to prescribe and dispense certain pharmaceuticals!

IPC Texas members should contact their representative today to let them know physician dispensing is bad public policy and not in the best interest of patient safety. You can call or email your Texas Rep Now using IPC’s Legislative Action Center.

With your immediate help, we can stall or kill this bill before it reaches the House floor.

Why IPC Opposes HB 1483:

  • It is the role of the pharmacist, who is trained specifically in drug interactions, side effects, and allergies, to dispense medications.
  • HB 1483 establishes bad precedent because it allows dangerous drugs to be allowed to escape the full oversight of the state agencies (State Board of Pharmacy and Texas Medical Board) created to preserve and protect public safety and health.
  • HB 1483 allows physicians to prescribe and dispense prescription medicines, creating patient safety concerns and possible dangerous drug interactions.
  • HB 1483 creates an inherent conflict of interest and anti-free market incentive by allowing certain drug companies to lobby doctors to prescribe and dispense prescription medicines without the options for less expensive over-the-counter medications.

If your state representative is on the House Calendars Committee they must hear from you ASAP!
